Q&A with Louise Read, Set Ready trainer, Location Scout, Location Coordinator, Photographer

What’s your background and how did you get involved with Set Ready Training?
I have worked in the Film and TV Industry for 30 years, specialising both in the Locations Department, and as a Professional Photographer. In both areas of my career, I started in the most junior roles of the department, learning and gaining as much experience as I could before progressing to more senior roles, eventually working as a Freelance Location Manager and Location Scout on TV Dramas, TV Commercials and Feature Films, and as a Freelance Photographer in the Music and Advertising Industries. Throughout my career I have worked with organisations such as the London Film Office, Regional Film Offices and organisations such as FilmFixer who provide essential services to Location Managers and TV Productions across the UK. Whilst working alongside these Film Offices and organisations I was asked to become a trainer. It is a role I really enjoy, as it gives me a chance to meet the next up and coming filmmakers and share knowledge and experience of working in the Film and TV Industry.

Why is Set Ready Training so Important?
Film and Television is a well established and growing industry but it can be a difficult workplace to enter into. Set Ready reaches out and provides opportunities equally to anyone who is keen to learn more about working in film and TV. Each trainer has valuable industry experience that they are able to share with trainees, helping provide an overview of what it can be like working as a Freelancer in the Creative Industries.

What makes Set Ready different?
Set Ready provides a level playing field which I really like. I meet trainees who come from every kind of background. The short courses are open to anyone, irrelevant of any previous knowledge or industry experience. Set Ready provides training courses that can equip people in taking that next step into possible work experience or paid work opportunities.

What is Set Ready?
Set Ready is an entry level training programme created by FilmFixer who provide a range of film services to Production Companies filming in London and throughout the UK. Part of their remit is to maximise the benefits of the UK Film Industry including employment opportunities. It is therefore in a unique position in terms of its industry links, knowledge and opportunities.

Would you recommend Set Ready to other Location Managers and if so, why?
Yes. Location Managers usually have a team of Location Assistants and Unit Managers that they work with, but on busy or demanding filming days they can require additional daily location crew. One of these roles is that of a Location Marshal. This is an entry level position that involves being on a film set to assist with day-to-day Location Department tasks. The Set Ready training programme provides a basic level of awareness, safety and on-set etiquette that is required to become a Location Marshal, meaning that Location Managers can contact Set Ready as and when they require Location Marshals for larger film shoots.

Do you have a Set Ready success story you can tell us about?
During the two years that I have been a Set Ready Trainer, several trainees have gone on to be placed in roles such as Location Marshals and Production Runners on TV Commercials and TV Dramas and started their journey to their own career

TV productions Louise has worked on include: It’s a Sin, Cold Feet, Coronation Street, The Rising. Feature films include: Skyfall, Harry Potter, Midas Man and many TV commercials for brands such as Nike, Beats, Adidas, McDonalds. She has worked on productions with writers such as Russell T Davies, Jimmy McGovern, Sally Wainwright, and directors such as Danny Boyle, Ridley Scott and Sam Mendes.
